Donation brightens the day for young girls

“ It broke my heart because the chances of the young boys following in this guy’s footsteps are very high,"

KwaThema – Ikusasa Lethu Foundation opened their hearts to ‘help a sister’ at an event held on Saturday.

They donated sanitary pads, clothes and toiletries and bibles to 125 girls from Mkhanqwa informal settlements.

Project administrator Itumeleng Molahlegi says the aim of the project is to show love and appreciation to the underprivileged young girls in the community.

“We also wanted to boost their self-esteem because we have identified that many end up feeling unimportant because of the area they are raised in.

“We have identified that there are a lot of girls who miss classes when they are experiencing their menstrual cycle because they cannot afford sanitary pads.

“They don’t want to make a mess when they are at school so they rather stay away.

“Through this project we are trying to ensure that girls are at school focusing on their studies and nothing else,” she says.

Itumeleng says during the event he also identified other challenges in the area concerning the young boys.

“I was concerned when I spoke to them and they told me that their role model is a notorious gangster in the area.

“They told me they are from a group called DSS (Delela skhothane s’oksolva).

“They were happy to be part of a feared gang and felt worthy and important.

“This broke my heart because the chances of the young boys following in this guy’s footsteps are very high.

“They don’t see any way out of their background other than through crime.

“As residents we cannot allow this to happen. We are going to adopt the group of boys and will try to change the way they see their future by offering them a motivational programme,” she says.
