Young writers inspired to aim big

The resource center hosted Talents and Arts Organisation’s the Future Writers project, on Tuesday and Wednesday, to inspire young writers to aim big.

Duduza – The resource centre hosted the Future Writers project of the Talents and Arts Organisation, on Tuesday and Wednesday, in order to inspire young writers to aim big.

Born and bred in Nongoma, KwaZulu Natal, Duminsani Nhlapo (38) says he wants to show people ekasi that they can build sustainable careers from their writing talents.

“While I was studying film and television in New York, I fell in love with literature.

To be a good writer, one needs to be an avid reader.”

Dumisani adds that he has seen many young children in Duduza who are talented in drama or writing speeches.

“I just wanted to help them to sharpen their skills.”

To facilitate the workshop, he invited Manichand Beharial, author of ‘Tommorow’s Dawn’, to educate the anxious learners.

“How you write will either make people want to read more, or stop.”

Beharial says it is important for a writer to pay attention to the impression he or she may be giving the reader.

“I can’t tell you how much to write or where to write. Texts need an introduction, body and a conclusion.

You need to decide before you start so that you don’t put in too much information.”

Thirteen-year-old Genius Moloko says he came to educate himself with the aim of becoming an author some day.

“I’m really interested in books,” said the Grade Eight learner from Esibonelo Esihle Secondary School.

“I would have loved to see more of my peers here so that we can learn together.

“I believe this will even help me in my school work.”

Dumisani says the black community members need to tell their own stories.

“We cant wait for someone from London to come here and tell our stories.”

He believes that this will make the stories more authentic.

“I am a developer, I’m building the nation.

“I don’t just want people to sit on the streets and do nothing.”
