Washing bins for a buck

Amagents washing bins keep each other off the streets while helping the community.

Tsakane – Amagents are washing bins to keep each other off the streets, while helping the community.

After months of helping Gogo Maphutheho Maseko with the garden at Michael Zulu Primary School, Sibusiso Dladla (23) and Themba Xhathisa (31) started washing bins to make extra cash.

“We got the idea after seeing the bins left out in the streets every Monday morning,” explains Sibusiso.

The guys then approached their neighbours to ask them if they could wash their bins for a small fee.

“In January we started with about 10 bins, but the number grew quickly,” adds Themba.

Young people from all over Kwatsaduza have caught on to the ‘bin washing’ trend.

Last month we found another group of young stars who washed bins to raise money to buy two boys school shoes, in KwaThema.

“These are my children. I shout at them when they falter.

“I just want to keep them off the streets,” says Gogo Maseko.

Sibusiso and Themba believe they are helping the other guys who are now working with them.

“When we started getting more clients, we asked other guys to join us so we can work faster,’ explains Sibusiso.

He believes keeping each other busy will prevent the guys from getting into trouble.

“I hope people don’t judge these guys based on their pasts, because some of them were hooked on drugs,” says Themba.

He says they have shown great improvement in the time they have been working together.

“They used to work really slowly like they were distracted.

Now they work much faster, as if they are determined to finish the job.”
