KwaThema Disabled Sports Club is celebrating youth month by raising awareness about the opportunities in sport for the disabled, at KwaThema Stadium, last Thursday.

KwaThema – KwaThema Disabled Sports Club is celebrating youth month by raising awareness about the opportunities in sport for the disabled, at KwaThema Stadium.

Aubrey Mathibela, team coach, says he is still overwhelmed by his athletes’ performances since the beginning of the year.

“I’m still hopeful that some of them will move on to represent South Africa in the World Championships later this year,” he explains.

The club won 27 medals at the Nedbank National Championship, held in Port Elizabeth earlier this year.

Thirty-year-old Nthabiseng Phala, who is no stranger to competitive athletics, brought home two golds and two silvers.

“My highlight was winning the shot put. I did not realise how much I have improved.”

She went on to win a gold medal at the South African Championships.

Neo Ndlovu (21) won gold for 100m, 200m and 400m races.

Archie Moleko, from Wheelchair Tennis SA, demonstrated new skills to the players.

Also in attendance are Siya Ndlovu from Centre of Gauteng for the Physically Disabled and Mduduzi Mnyandu, assistance coach at Soccer City.

Coach Mathibela says he wants to use the successes of other to encourage those are at home to join and show off their talents.

“There is no need to hide and do nothing.

I know it may be hard to step out but we will not know whether you have talent our not, if you don’t come out.”
