Fight against germs is on-says department

Department of basic education joins forces to fight unhygiene behaviour in schools.

Kwatsaduza – The department of basic education in partnership with Unilever have joined forces to fight unhygienic environment in schools.

This came after a need for improved hygiene and sanitation habits was identified at schools.

The department and Unilever signed a memorandum of understanding which will see the launch of the Unilever National Schools Hygiene and Sanitation Programme.

Minister Angie Motshekga says this will bring substantial advancement in providing hygiene education to every Grade One learner in the country.

“This initiative forms part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) goal aimed at helping more than one billion people to improve their health and wellbeing by 2020.

“The programme will be rolled out from September 2017 to 15 000 public primary schools across the country.

“This will be implemented in the class by teachers through a proven behaviour change model, with product provision from Lifebuoy, Domestos and Mentadent to enable the practice of improved hygiene habits by children,” she says.

Global Chief Executive Officer of Unilever, Paul Polman, says the programme is designed to help kids stay healthy and get a better education by avoiding the kinds of preventable infections that too often mean they miss school.

“This programme is vitally important as it inculcates healthy and hygienic habits in our learners.

“Children who are healthy can attend school more regularly and participate actively in everyday learning activities at school,” concludes Polman.
