Toddler and baby burnt to death at Dunnottar Military Base

An inquest was opened at the Dunnottar Police Station after two children burned to death on Sunday.

The children, a one-year-old boy and a six-month-old girl, burned to death when a heater caught fire and exploded at a house at the Dunnottar Military Base.

At 4.50pm, the parents of the children, who were not siblings, smelled something burning.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says by the time the parents went upstairs the heater had already caught fire and exploded.

“The beds were burning and the room was filled with smoke,” he says.

The father tried to save both children but sustained burn wounds and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“At this stage, it would appear the heater was the cause of the fire,” says Ramphora.
