Theatre well received in Duduza

Duduza - Thabo Pholo (31) set out to cultivate a theatre culture in his community when he brought his stage production, Foot on the Grave, to town last Sunday.

Pholo believes the exposure of working with great writers on the biggest stages in Mzansi gave him the experience he needed to go on his own.

Foot on the Grave is about how he believes people lose their (cultural) roots and are easily influenced by Western culture.

The main character is a young woman who finds herself having to make a decision about carrying on the tradition of ubunyanga (traditional healer) in her family.

“Many young people are dealing with an identity crisis, so the message is relevant,” he says.

And, on Sunday the audience got to see the production come to life.

“Firstly, staging or hosting a theatre show is hard work,” he says.

But he expected it to be a hard journey, he explains, because learning is hard work.

“The show was awesome as everything went according to plan,’ he adds.

Pholo says he is very grateful for the support he received from the community.

“What made me happy on that day was seeing smiles, laughter and tears on the faces of the audience and the debate we had after the show,” he says.

Pholo believes the community should always come out in numbers to support shows that groom and inspire the youth and hopes attendance will improve over time.
