Beware when crossing the veld, Duduza police warn

Duduza - Duduza police are urging the residents in the area, especially those in John Dube Village, to be vigilant and avoid crossing through the open veld between John Dube Village and Duduza location.

Duduza police spokesman, Sergeant Harry Manaka, says the open veld has long grass which makes it easy for criminals to prey on unsuspecting people.

“The residents cross through the bushes as a shortcut to the location.

“We understand that if you don’t cross through this area, you might have to go around the main road, which might take a few more minutes of your time.

“It is better to take a few more minutes than risk your life,” he says.

Manaka say that in the past few weeks they have witnessed a rise in cases of robberies and rapes in the area.

“Schoolchildren have also complained about being mugged and robbed of their belongings in broad daylight on their way to and from school.

“At night it is even worse because they also target people riding bicycles.

“The open veld is very convenient for criminals because, even when chased by the police, they hide in the long grass,” he says.

“While we are still negotiating with the municipal authorities to assist in cutting the long grass, we would like to urge the community to avoid using the footpath in the open veld.”
