Learners encouraged to report violence

Tsakane - The police from the Tsakane Police Station held a domestic violence and sexual abuse awareness at Geluksdal 2 Primary School on Monday.

The learners were taught about their rights and encouraged to report any kind of abuse they might experience.

Tsakane police spokesman Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu says the learners were also discouraged from becoming involved in gangsterism and bullying.

“We have realised that some of the learners show signs of abuse in school but they are afraid and ashamed to disclose this.

“They end up participating in illegal activities and even join gangs targeting their peers,” she says.

Mngomezulu says, through different campaigns in schools, the learners will come to know that it is not their fault if they are abused and that abuse is wrong.

“We are hoping to reform the learners at an early age for them to become better and [more] responsible citizens.

“We are also encouraging them to report any domestic violence that they experience at home to their teachers and adults.

“The educators are meant to be the link between the police and the learners,” she says.

Gender Based Ambassador Master Mahlangu said they are encouraging the children to report any form of abuse and criminal activities to their elders or the police.
