Girl learners encouraged to form relationships

Tsakane - Girls from 10 high schools were encouraged to respect each other during the Intombi Isbekile Dialogue, held at Tsakane Community Hall, on Tuesday.

Each school allowed 50 learners to participate in the dialogue, which was hosted by the Tsakane police following a series of arrests of girl learners at high schools.

Police spokesman Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu says teachers regularly complained about the bad behaviour of girl learners and the police often had to intervene.

“These learners were fighting, belonging to gangs and targeting learners from neighbouring schools.

“We were alarmed and worried about their futures which is why we decided to host a dialogue to allow them to identify problems and come up with solutions,” Mngomezulu says.

“The learners were put into groups with girls from other schools and they had to brainstorm problems and solutions.

“This was to allow them to build relationships and a feeling of sisterhood, regardless of the schools they come from.”

Mngomezulu says parents need to have positive relationships with their children.

“They need to know their children to be able to identify when there is a problem or a change in their personality.

“These children are angry and are targeting their anger at learners who appear weak.

“They also become violent towards their teachers and if this behaviour is not curbed they will end up committing serious crimes.

“We are also pleading to parents to be positive role models for their children and not do anything negative in their presence,” she says.

The police were pleased with the participation of the learners.

“They developed codes of conducts they will abide by, which include respecting fellow learners and teachers,” Mngomezulu says.
