Let’s tango!

KwaThema - Penwell Nhlapho, a professional ballroom dancer and coach, says he knew he had to come back from Cape Town and help develop the youth in his hometown.

“Our Tango Dancing School only started a couple of weeks ago.

“We are still quite small,” he says.

Penwell, who has won multiple South African championships in ballroom dance, wants to impart his knowledge on the youth.

He says he used to run a dance school before in the area, until he relocated to Cape Town.

“I am back now, and my passion has always been the youth and doing something to keep them off the streets.”

He explains the problem, however, is finding facilities at which to hold the classes.

“I teach classes in and around Johannesburg but I want to develop the youth in my own township.

“I believe when people, especially the youth, don’t have anything to do they end up doing stupid things.

“My priority is to develop structures, even in schools, to teach dancing skills and to see my students compete in formal competitions.”

Adults are also invited to join the dance school for fitness and social purposes.

Penwell also offers classes to couples who are preparing for weddings and choreographs dances for graduation ceremonies at crèches and preschools.

Our Tango Dancing School meets at 3pm every Sunday, at the soup kitchen, Overline, KwaThema, and classes are free.
