Making moves in chess

Duduza - Chess is a game of strategy. Thabo Nkwane’s (55) strategy is to get as many children as possible involved in the sport.

Nkwane runs the Duduza Chess Development Club, where he coaches young players in how to master the game.

“I go from school to school, every weekday, teaching the kids the skills they need to be the best in the sport in Duduza,” he says.

He explains that some of the children are catching on very quickly and excelling.

“One of my best students is only 10 years old. He even beats high school kids. I am keeping an eye on him,” he says.

His students are all between the ages of 9 and 19.

Nkwane is currently overseeing play-offs in preparation for the chess championship, which will be held in Springs, in May.

He has to select five learners from each age group to represent Duduza.

“They are pushing themselves very hard, I can tell.”

Although he has many learners, he would like to see more schools signing up to start chess clubs.

Because chess is such a strategic game, it also helps learners solve real-life problems, he says.

Nkwane believes there is a lot of talent just waiting to be discovered.

“I just want the schools and parents to give me a platform. I am willing and able,” he says.
