Poorly constructed toilets are a pain – resident

KwaThema - The residents of KwaThema Extension are not happy about the state of their toilets.

The toilets were constructed three years ago but the residents say they were poorly constructed and of poor quality.

Ward committee member, Amos Makhonjwa, says in the first week after the toilet was handed over to him, the toilet seat was damaged.

“Some of the toilets seem to be sinking, the taps are broken and water from the toilet bowl seeps through and floods the bathroom,” he says.

Amos says he immediately informed the person responsible for the construction and ward councillor at the time who promised to fix them.

“Weeks, months and years passed without anything being done or anyone coming to inspect the conditions.

“I lodged a complaint about the toilets again to a new ward councillor when he took office in August but he doesn’t seem to be interested in this problem,” he says.

Amos says that he has lost hope that one day the toilets will be fixed.

“We are taken for granted as the residents, we are bribed with poorly constructed toilets and forced to accept this as service delivery,” he says.

Another resident, Bonginkosi Mdebele, says his toilet didn’t flush when it was handed over to him.

“I am forced to collect water from the tap outside, hold the bucket full of water in the air and pour the water into the toilet to force the waste down.

“This is not different from using the pit toilet.

“When I am sick I cannot hold the bucket full of water in the air,” he says.

Ward 111 councillor Tshepiso Mondlane, says he was not aware of the conditions of the toilets.

“I haven’t received any complaints since I took office but I will investigate the matter to find a long-lasting solution,” he says.
