This forms part of the Grade Eight and 12s annual drive.
Every year the Grade 12 RCL executive selects a community initiative or charity drive to support.
“By collecting toiletries the RCL hopes to make the learners at school aware of how fortunate they are and to give back to others,” says Ester Noome, the RCL liaison officer.
Each class has been asked to collect toiletry items such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, sanitary towels, soaps, facecloths, body lotion and lip balm.

These will soon be delivered to a designated orphanage by the girls, who will also spend the day there.
Noome says the learners have a culture of reaching out to the community.
“This effort is meant to assist in uplifting young girls in our area who do not have access to what so many take for granted. It also allows our learners to take stock of how fortunate they are,” she says.
Every month will have a theme in the ‘Spirit of Sisterhood’ and the ideals are supported by the initiative.

“On selected Fridays, learners will pay a small amount to participate,” says Noome.
February was christened ‘Hello Fashionable February’ and the message focused on self-love and was symbolised by the colour pink.
Pink ribbons were sold for a mere R2 and learners had to wear the ribbons on their blazer lapels or their school dresses.
They also recently celebrated ‘Lipstick Friday’, when the learners were allowed to wear lipstick in class.
“To end off February they celebrated ‘Pretty-in-Pink’ Friday, when learners could wear pink accessories to school,” says Noome.
This is followed by ‘Motivational March’, the message of which is self-esteem.
The symbolic colour for this is purple and ribbons will again be on sale.
Noome says the rest of the year will follow a similar pattern and will evolve as the girls come up with ideas.
“With this our girls are reminded to be mindful, grateful and giving,” says Noome.
