Residents fear uncut grass will lead to accidents

KwaThema - Residents fear that the long uncut grass on street corners and unoccupied plots is putting their lives in danger.

They allege that the grass in the area has not been cut since last year.

A concerned resident, Alina Motsepe (60), says that they have reported the matter to the council numerous times.

“When we complain at the council offices they give us reference numbers and promise to attend to the grass-cutting within a week.

“We have been waiting since last year, hoping that one day they will turn up, but they never do.

“We have lost hope,” she says.

Motsepe says that criminals in the area hide in the grass and rob people of their valuables.

“We fear walking out when it is dark because we don’t know who will be hiding in the long grass.”

“The long grass is now breeding rats, mosquitoes and illegal dumping sites.

“We are unable to sit outside because of the rats and mosquitoes,” she adds.

Another resident, Ezra Tali (65), says that he fears that the long grass at the street corners might cause accidents.

“When approaching the T-junction, drivers cannot see oncoming vehicles.

“We have to peep right into the road first to see whether there is a car coming before we can drive in or take the curve.

“We are pleading with the municipality to cut the grass and clean the unoccupied plots,” he says.

Ehurhuleni spokesman, Themba Gadebe, says that it is the responsibility of the owner of the stand to ensure that the stand is properly maintained.

“The notices with time frames were already served on the owners of the private vacant stands to cut the grass.

“If they fail to cut within a specific time frame, a contractor will be appointed by the Ekurhuleni’s Health and Social Department to cut the grass and the bill will be issued to the owner,” he says.

Gadebe says grass on the pavements of privately owned stands as well as the grass in parks and on council-owned stands are cut by the council department.
