WATCH: KwaThema results for 2016 matric

KwaThema – There have been mixed emotions regarding the results of the Class of 2016 matrics, while many schools believe that there's room for improvement.

Zimisele Secondary School’s pass rate has increased from 82.35% to 97.47%

It achieved 56 bachelors passes, 44 diplomas, 16 higher certificates and 20 distinctions.

Of the school’s 119 matrics who wrote, 116 passed; three didn’t achieve the pass mark.

Principal Dempsey Noge says it’s through the hard work and the co-operation of the staff, learners and parental involvement, that they got this result.

“As a school, we continuously motivated our learners to believe in themselves and that every dream is possible; so we are very happy it paid off.

“From here, it’s more hard work for us as a team,” he says.

Phulong Secondary School’s pass rate dropped from 94% to 85.35%.

The school attained the second highest pass rate in KwaThema.

The students got 54 bachelors passes, 55 diplomas, 25 higher certificates and 13 distinctions.

In total, there were 157 matriculants who wrote and 134 who passed.

Principal Jabulani Nyoni says the school pass rate dropped, due to some distractions they had throughout the year and due to the number of progressed learners the school had.

“Though the pass rate is lower, our learners still did well in terms of the bachelor and diploma passes, so we are happy with the quality of learning,” he says.

Kenneth Masikela Secondary School obtained a pass rate of 84.67%.

Learners received 73 bachelors, 107 diplomas, 30 higher certificates and 20 distinctions.

Out of 248 learners who wrote the exams, 210 passed.

Lefa-Ifa Secondary School saw a decrease in the pass rate of 83.16%, compared to 87% during the previous year.

They received 22 bachelors, 50 diplomas, 12 higher certificates and nine distinctions.

The school had 101 candidates who wrote the exams and 84 passed.

Principal Mbuyiseni Nxumalo says the challenge was that they had a number of progressed learners and as a result, a large number of them didn’t make it – despite the support given to them especially in maths and science.

“Most of these learners however, qualify for supplementary exams – so we hope that after that, there will be a slight change in terms of our overall results,” he says.

Laban Motlhabi Secondary School followed the pack, with a 78.86% pass rate.

The school had 123 learners who wrote their matric and 97 managed to pass.

They scooped 23 bachelors, 52 diplomas, 22 higher certificates and 17 distinctions.

Nkumbulo Secondary School got an increased pass rate of 77.52%, compared to the 73.65% in 2015.

The school had 178 students who wrote their matric and 138 managed to pass.

They got 34 bachelors, 85 diplomas, 19 higher certificates and eight distinctions.

Tlakula Secondary School experienced a drop in their pass rate after receiving 58.86%.

In 2015 the school’s pass rate stood at 76.4%.

The students got 29 bachelors, 38 diplomas, 16 higher certificates and 16 distinctions.

Out of 141 matrics who wrote sat the final examinations, 83 passed.
