Victory for Valencia

KwaThema – Soccer lovers filled the KwaThema Stadium as teams played their final matches in the Mnaka Mining Cup tournament on Saturday.

One of the toughest matches on the day was played in the u/17 division, where Valencia and Over Comers fought hard in the first half to take the lead.

But as the challenge continued, it was proving to be more tricky getting the ball into the net for both sides, while instructions from coaches kept echoing from the side line.

Crucial chances missed by both sides, resulted in the boys walking off the field with no goals at half time.

A sense of urgency then seemed to kick in during the second stanza for Valencia, as they took the lead.

That soon led to an opening goal by team captain Siyabonga Manana.

As the boys’ celebrations broke out on the field after the goal, with Valencia players still dancing all over the green, referee Raymond Bengu blew the whistle for the game to go on.

That almost cost them the lead, as Over Comers missed an equalising goal which angered Valencia coach Thembinkosi Mntoyintoni.

But Bengu didn’t take his decision being questioned lightly, as he ordered Mntoyintoni off the pitch.

Shortly after that drama, Lebohang Matshaba of Valencia managed to extend their lead, scoring the second goal for the day.

Seeing their chances slipping away, Over Comers rebooted and got their act together, which resulted in Themba Sereme soon scoring for his side.

As the battle continued close to the end, Over Comers missed numerous shots that needed to be on target to equalise.

That led to Valencia walking away with a 2-1 win.
