Helping learners through career guidance

Kwatsaduza – A career expo was conducted for 30 learners from local schools recently.

According to director of Ingcikithi Life Coaching, Busi Taumang, they developed a Workplace Career Exposure Programme that is aimed at exposing children at primary and high school levels to various careers that exist in the country and internationally.

“Through this initiative we hope that there will be improved academic performance, an informed career focus for each learner and positively influenced perspectives.

“It is also to ensure our young people are career ready and purpose-driven individuals, with an improved understanding of the educational experience need for their desired careers, improved school attendance and reduced drop-out rates,” she says.

Taumang adds that the recruitment of learners was not strictly defined, to allow the schools to choose as they saw fit.

The schools were, however, asked to select the best, middle and worst performing learners, so they could get to experience these fields as a way of motivating them.

Two days were then allocated to two different career paths.

These included visiting the South African Police Service, courts and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.

The learners further discovered aviation careers, including being a pilot, and working as cabin crew or in maintenance. Other career paths included paramedics, flight safety and firefighting.

“We are very happy with the response from the five KwaThema schools we selected and the individual learners from Springs who were brought through by their parents.

“Next year we are looking at doing this project again, though it will maybe be done on a quarterly basis per school,” she says.
