Addressing issues of good governance

Kwatsaduza – A local radio station based in Tsakane hosted a Local Governance Leadership Breakfast recently.

The event was held at the Faranani Multi-Purpose Centre.

Present to share ideas on this topic were local councillors from various wards from around Ekurhuleni along with representatives of various government departments.

According to the radio spokesman, Mbuso Mpungose the breakfast was targeted at new local government leadership of Ekurhuleni with the hope of imparting valuable insights on good governance as they prepare for their new venture.

“For this main reason, speakers lined up for the day included Auditor General, Good Governance Africa, PARI, Wits School of Governance and Stats SA.

“The main message shared on the day emphasised the importance of good governance and how it can be achieved.

“Through this, we hope that the gathering will ensure that the local leadership is well equipped for delivering services to our people,” he said.

One of the speakers, Ward Clr Desmond Buitendacht said people are tired of hearing about governance and now want good governance.

Another speaker was Provincial Head of Gauteng, Statics South Africa, Dr Mahlape Mohale who explained that as a government department, their purpose is to guide other departments by providing them with indicators and stats so they can make informed decisions.

She also shared stats on the province and of Ekurhuleni, what has been done well in terms of service delivery in both these areas and where they still needed to improve.

Mohale shared detailed demographics, poverty drivers in the country and Ekurhuleni, income of different genders, races and age groups, sector analysis, challenges in society and where local leaders need to intervene to move the country forward.

One of the most important points she made was that there is a need to ensure that African youth don’t just register for and then drop out of tertiary institutions but that they complete their studies.
