New road construction for KwaThema

KwaThema – A new road is currently being constructed in the area.

According to Ward 80 councillor Wilson Busakwe, the road which will start from Kgaswane Street will lead all the way to Vlakfontein Road.

In the current budget, the work on the road will go halfway to Marule Street.

Then in the next financial year, it will continue from Marule Street moving all the way to Vlakfontein Road.

“The project officially started last week Tuesday with contractors from Midrand and 16 locals from wards 77 and 80.

“It is estimated that the first phase of the process will take about two months or longer to be completed.

“We are very pleased with this development as it will really help in minimising crime which was occurring in this space, causing many residents to be attacked,” he says.

Busakwe also adds that this will help in decreasing the amount of littering taking place while helping keep the area clean, since some residents had turned this into an illegal dumping spot.

The project will further ease traffic congestion on Kgaswane Street, especially over the weekends as it is a street which is frequently used when there are funerals.

The councillor also shares briefly that there is a possibility that when the BRT comes to the area, it might also use this new road.

Site supervisor Elvis Rakgatha explains that currently they are in the process of placing dump rocks.

This will then be followed by adding a fill, erecting caps on the side of the road and G1 (crusher stones).

After that they will complete the process by adding prim and tar.

Simphiwe Radebe (24) from Ward 77, who has benefited by being employed to work on this site, says she is grateful for the opportunity, because since she lives with her grandmother and sister and they only survive on her grandmother’s pension money, at least now she can also help out at home.
