Hijacking suspect arrested while other flees

Etwatwa - One wounded suspect (34) remains at an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment and is under police guard.

This follows an incident which occurred on Wednesday morning at about 11am where the EMPD and a tracker company were able to recover a white Toyota Hilux bakkie in Etwatwa.

The vehicle was found an hour after it had been hijacked in Nigel, confirms EMPD spokesman Clifford Shongwe.

“The suspects in the hijacked vehicle were chased until they reached Nobela Street at the Mandela Section in Etwatwa.

“As suspects started shooting at officers who returned fire and one suspect was shot. The driver then lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a wall of one of the houses,” says Shongwe.

He adds, however, that one of the suspects evaded arrest.

A 9mm firearm was recovered from the scene.
