Children taught about their heritage

KwaThema – It was a celebration to remember at the KwaThema Hostel, when children of KwaThema Hostel Play Group honoured Heritage Day last Friday.

The children were geared up in their traditional attire ready to sing, dance and recite traditional poetry.

According to Dineo Mmakola, administrator of the programme, the Early Childhood Development programme was started to reach out to the poorest of the poor in the community.

She says they run it four days a week for four hours, so they are able to develop the children who are living in the hostel through play and social development and by providing nutrition for them.

“So to educate them about our heritage and traditions we taught them poems and songs for heritage day and requested them to come dressed in their cultural regalia.

“It is important that our children are taught about their heritage and origins in order to equip them with the knowledge of how far we have come as a people and for them to know where they are headed in life,” she explains.

The children recited poems in isiZulu and Xhosa and were taught a bit of history of Zulu king Shaka Zulu.

“We are happy that parents also rose to the occasion and dressed up the children in beautiful African regalia in order for the day to be a success,” says Nombuso Mchunu, a practitioner.
