Fifteen-year sentence for rapists

KwaThema – Sibusiso Gift Tshabalala (25) and Mongezi Monde Mbonani (24) have started serving their sentences following their rape and armed robbery conviction.

The two were handed their punishment at the Springs Regional Court, on June 22.

This comes after an incident which took place in October 26, 2013 around 10.30pm where three women were at a local pub, but as two of them decided to move to another pub the complainant (23 at the time) said she wanted to go home.

While she was on her way, she was approached by one of the men, who pointed a broken bottle at her and took her to an open space.

As they arrived there, another guy joined in and the duo raped the young woman, then took her cellphone and cash and fled the scene.

The complainant was later rescued by a passerby.

After some investigation, the following month on November 10, both men were arrested at their place of residence.

The two then started appearing at the KwaThema Court for rape and armed robbery from July 28, 2014 until the case was transferred to the Springs Regional Court this year.

As they made it for their final court appearance, Tshabalala and Mbonani were both convicted of 15 years each for rape and eight years each for armed robbery.

The pair has started serving their sentence at the Modderbee Prison.
