Mabaso’s house flooded by sewage

Tsakane – Vincent Mabaso (55) has lost the hope of living in a clean environment after years of having to deal with a blocked manhole continuously oozing sewage in his yard.

The Extension 16 resident claims the manhole has been giving him problems since 2011 and despite numerous visits from the municipality, the problem still persists.

“When I call them now they either don’t come or ask me what they are supposed to do?

“It frustrates me that people who are employed to deal with such issues fail to do so and can’t tell me what exactly the problem is; instead each time they promise the problem is fixed but three days later I sit with the same problem,” says the frustrated resident.

To make matters worse his three-year-old daughter fell extremely sick recently and till today doctors don’t know what is wrong with her.

Mabaso claims his daughter’s condition has to do with the sewage and bad stench forever looming in his yard.

In a quest to try and keep his daughter from becoming sicker, the family does not open windows and the child doesn’t go outside under any circumstances.

“My daughter has stopped going to crèche because we fear she might contract other viruses while we still wait for more test results.

“It pains me as a parent because my daughter was a healthy baby full of life and now she has to suffer and not play with other children,” adds Mabaso.

Residents in the area are also affected because the sewage runs into an open veld which children cross to get to and from school.

The African Reporter sent questions to the Ekurhuleni Metro who had not responded by the time of publishing.
