Resident fights balaclava-clad hijackers, recognizes one from John Dube Village

Duduza - On Thursday evening around 10:30pm a 25-year-old resident was hijacked on arrival at his home in Masechaba View.

The local business owner was returning home from his tuck shop in John Dube Village, when he was hijacked of his vehicle, a silver grey Ford Ranger LDV, at the gate of his house.

According to the police, the victim got out of his vehicle to open the gate, leaving the car idling, when he was startled by two assailants wearing balaclavas and carrying a firearm.

“The suspects assaulted the victim on his head with the gun and he became slightly dizzy.

“One suspect ran to the passenger seat of the idling vehicle while the second suspect was grabbed by the victim.

“The two wrestled and in the struggle the victim was able to pull the balaclava off the suspect’s head and immediately recognised him as a local resident of John Dube Village,” says police spokesman, W/O Imtiaz Yakub Rasool.

The suspects fled in the vehicle, leaving the victim lying in front of his gate.

The victim then immediately alerted the police and members of Duduza SAPS gave a lookout alert, over the SAPS communication radio which resulted in the vehicle being spotted on the R550 Klipriver Road heading in the direction of Nigel.

“The police chased the vehicle to Dunnottar where they received further assistance from other officers in another Duduza SAPS vehicle.

“The suspects were forced to stop and both were arrested and a toy firearm, crowbar and hammer were recovered from them,” adds Rasool.

The investigation is ongoing.

The suspects will appear at the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
