Hostel gets a clean up

KwaThema - On Friday, the Clean Neighbourhood Friday came to KwaThema Hostel.

The programme was recently stated by the City of Ekurhuleni with the aim of promoting a cleaner environment for residents of the city.

Various departments within the metro came out in numbers to support and help to clean the hostel, along with with city brigades.

Leading the delegation was KwaThema Customer Care Centre manager Andries Nkabinde, who pointed out the importance of keeping their environment safe and clean to the community.

“People should stop dumping their rubbish in public spaces,” he said.

“As a city we want to lead by example and also encourage the community to take part in the fight against illegal dumping and for us to strive to live in a cleaner and healthier environment.”

Also present to lend support was Clean Neighbour ambassador Manaka Ranaka, who also motivated community members to get involved in the programme and to stop being spectators in their own community.

Brigades and volunteers dispersed in groups to clean identified illegal dumping hot spots, and to pick litter at streams and wetlands.

The programme will continue every last Friday and community members are urged to do their bit to ensure the environment stays clean.

“There has been an enormous improvement in our township and we need residents to assist us in killing this problem, so our children have a safe and clean community to live in,” added Nkabinde.
