New RDP houses in Etwatwa

Daveyton - Scores of shack dwellers in Etwatwa Extension 35, Combisa Section were handed their RDP houses last Saturday.

After many years living in shacks, the residents were overwhelmed when they received their newly built houses which were handed over by MMC of Human Settlement, Clr Aubrey Nxumalo.

A total number of 154 homes were allocated to the residents who have been patiently waiting to own homes for the very first time.

Senior citizen, Lizzy Mqhuma (81) couldn’t hold back her tears of joy of now having a proper home to live in.

“I applied for this house in 1996 and I never thought I would ever get it, especially when a portion of my shack caught fire last year in August.

“Luckily no one got hurt; today I’m happy that my grandchildren will have a warm and safe home this winter,” she said.

According to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, a second batch of houses consisting of 178 units will be built by July as part of the Combisa project.
