Food donated to hungry learners

KwaThema – Uthando Lwenkosi Home-Based Care would like to thank the African Reporter and two companies who have made it possible for them to continuously provide nutritious lunch meals to needy learners of Lefa-Ifa Secondary School.

This comes after the care centre staff appeared in the African Reporter in February, for donations they had given to orphans and less fortunate learners at the school.

The team had also at the time, shared the challenge they were facing of feeding the learners daily, as the school has no feeding scheme, and how they were using money from their own pockets to at least try to provide the learners with lunch each Friday.

“After our story appeared in the African Reporter, we were able to get a commitment from the Spar in Geduld and they have been donating 13 dozen or more rolls to us each week.

“In addition to that, the Nedbank in Johannesburg also gave us a R15 000 donation so we can continue with this project.

“We are really thankful for the help of these people as this will truly help us, since we were buying food for these children from our own pockets, so now things are better,” says Bishop Nomvula Ximba.

She adds that at some stage they are hoping to get to a point where they will have enough so they can give these learners food on a daily basis.

One of the learners at the school, Phomolo Mosothoane (16) says the ladies started visiting their school last year and this has made a big difference in their lives.

“The food these women give us helps us a lot as some of us don’t get food or money for lunch from home.

“Through their efforts at least we have one day of the week where we don’t have to worry about what we will eat for lunch,” he says.

Another learner, Thapelo Mkhethelwa emphasises that the food they get on Fridays helps them a lot as they are able to concentrate better in class and it is very tasty, which shows it’s made by people who care and with love.

He adds there is a lot of them who benefit from this project, hence they appreciate it.

“We just wish and pray that these ladies could come to our school daily and in the mornings as it’s getting colder and since soon we will be starting with our exams, so that our focus can just be on our schoolwork.

“We are truly thankful to the ladies and hope they will continue feeding us and other school learners in similar situations to ours,” says Christopher Banda.
