Easter soccer tournament a success

KwaThema - Soccer lovers gathered over the long weekend for a fun-filled day as teams from around KwaThema competed in the Five-A-Side Easter Soccer Tournament.

Players and fans filled the Bulithando Park on Saturday to see who would walk away as champs and with the winning prize.

A total of 16 teams competed for the title and in the first semi-final Ben 10 won 2-0 against Brazil. In the second semi-final Barcelona won 1-0 against Soweto.

Brazil and Soweto then went head to head for third position and their game ended in a 0-0 draw. However, Brazil won 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out.

Barcelona walked away victorious in the final after ending their game 1-0 against Ben 10, making them the champions of the tournament.

They walked away with R3 000 and a trophy. Runners-up received R2 000, and the third team earned themselves R1 000.

One of the organisers of the tournament, Vusi Shabangu, says the tournament was made possible by the KwaThema Five-A-Side Development Project, to help keep young people off the streets and entertained.

He adds that this was their first tournament and they are happy with the response of the young people.

“Our future plan is to have a Five-A-Side league which is set to kick off on April 24 at the KwaThema Sports Complex. However, so far the teams we have are still playing friendly games.

“The league will have 16 teams in total, so we are still inviting other local teams to come and join us, as we currently have 10 teams registered.

“Thank you to all the people who helped in making this tournament a success and to the teams who came to play,” says Shabangu.

He says they encourage other local business people to come on board as they also plan to take this initiative to schools.
