Ballroom dancing for youth

Kwatsaduza - Ballroom dancer Penwell Nhlapo is bringing ballroom and Latin dancing back into the community.

After years of being away from his birthplace, KwaThema, he sought to give back to his community through dance.

Penwell, who has immense experience and has represented South Africa in a number of world- renowned dancing competitions, will be giving free classes to children and teenagers.

“Dancing was a huge sport when I was growing up in KwaThema. There were around 100 young people going to the community hall to dance,” he says.

Since then, says Penwell, dancing has fizzled out and there are not a lot of people getting into this sport.

He believes that there is potential for the development of excellent dancers from Kwatsaduza if they can get proper training from an earlier age.

“With the high crime rate and social problems facing our communities, I believe keeping young people occupied through sports will sway them from falling victim to criminal activities and bad company,” says the dancer.

As a start, Penwell will be giving lessons once a week at the Springs Hall and next month he will start at the KwaThema Community Hall.

Registration is open and classes will commence on Tuesday from 6pm until 7pm.
