Organisations educate the youth

Tsakane – Local organisations raised drug awareness through drama, poetry and music, at Buhlebemfundo Secondary School, in Tsakane.

Last Friday, learners at the school were entertained and educated about the dangers of experimenting with substances, selling substances at schools, teenage pregnancy and late arrival at schools.

The Twin Plug Organisation and the Local Drug Action Committee, who deal with the youth of the community of Tsakane, saw the need to inform and warn learners about the disadvantages of such behaviour.

Speaking on behalf of the organisations, Sboniswa Sibiya says there is a concerning rate of substances being sold at schools and it is their duty, as organisations that seek to uplift and support young people, to inform learners about such issues.

“Many young people have fallen victim to such issues and need guidance on the social skills we are faced with in the community.

“That is why we saw the need to raise awareness through arts and music,” says Sibiya.

Members of the organisations recited poems and acted out scenes relating to various subjects that made learners aware that crime and substance abuse don’t pay.

More importantly, they engaged with the learners to make them aware that there is help for those who are victimised and forced to do things they don’t want to.

Sibiya adds that this is the first of many awareness campaigns that they are undertaking for the youth and they will be visiting all the secondary schools in Tsakane and, hopefully, in other parts of Kwatsaduza.
