Locals represent KwaThema in tennis

KwaThema – Over the past weekend six tennis players from the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy wheelchair tennis team went to the Elias Park Stadium to attend a provincial tennis camp.

According to the chairperson of the academy, Aubrey Mathibela, the purpose of the camp was to select players who will in the future represent the province and later be selected for Wheelchair Tennis South Africa.

“It was a great experience for our members and soon we will find out which of them have made the cut.

“The selected members will move on to play tournaments and additionally attend international camps where they will be trained to compete at international level.

“I am happy for them and hope that they can take this seriously, so that they can at least be selected in these rankings as we are the only community team in Gauteng while KwaThema is the only area to be affiliated with schools,” he says.

One of the players, Sibusiso Khuzwayo (30), says that he was happy to be selected to represent his township.

He adds that he hopes they have done enough to make it to the next level.

Another player, Isaac Mthombeni (40), says that one of the challenges they are faced with is lack of proper facilities which makes it harder for them to train or be at competition level.

“We need to have a tennis court with proper lines and fencing which can accommodate us, so we can be able to compete better at completion level,” he says.
