Primary school children encouraged to play cricket

KwaThema – The KwaThema Cricket Club hosted a junior cricket festival of 12 teams (u/12 groups) last Saturday at the KwaThema Sports Complex.

Teams from all around Ekurhuleni came to participate in the festival, with each team playing three games.

Head coach of the KwaThema Cricket Club, Itumeleng Ntsoane, says he is happy that the festival took place at their home ground, where young cricket players are able to show their cricket potential and learn from each other.

“KwaThema Cricket Club has been identified as one of the growing clubs in the eastern region, we pride ourselves for hosting an event of this kind and for it to be such a success,” says Ntsoane.

The KwaThema u/12 boys team won only one of the three games they played during the festival.

Chairman of the KwaThema Cricket Club, Peter Vonya, says the club is on a quest to equip and advance the standards of cricket in the community with initiatives aimed at growing junior cricket players, boys and girls, under the age of 12.

“We have learnt in latter years that junior cricket has been on the decline and festivals like these aim to revitalise the growth of the club and foster all KwaThema primary schools to participate in cricket,” he says.

Vonya urges all primary schools to engage with the club as they try and grow mini cricket participation across all schools and give local

children a sporting chance.
