SAPS hunt two men after violent attack on family

Springs – Two men carried out a violent attack on a local family on Monday when they assaulted a 65-year-old woman, killed her son (26) and raped her daughter.

The horrific incident took place in the Gugulethu Everest informal settlement.

According to Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the woman was dropped off at Welgedacht Road at about 2am after travelling from KwaZulu-Natal by taxi.

As she walked to her house, the woman was approached by two Sotho speaking men who assaulted her and searched her bag.

The woman screamed and called her children for help, who came to her rescue and alerted the community.

“The suspect’s ran away, but later came back to the woman’s house, kicked the door open and shot the women’s son (26) three times.

“The old lady was also with her grandchild when she was attacked, but the child was not harmed.

“Her son’s body was taken to the state mortuary,” say Rhampora.

He says the incident was first reported as a suicide and adds that the woman’s daughter has since come forward claiming she was raped by the two men.

It is alleged the men took her to a vacant building not far from the scene.

She has been assisted at the Crime Service Centre and by the Family and Violence Sexual Offences Unit.

No arrests have been made.

Cases of rape, murder and robbery have been opened at the Springs Police Station.
