Learner excels at maths

Geluksdal - Abahle Madela (9) from Geluksdal Primary School 2, has made his teachers extremely proud after excelling in the Mental Maths Olympiad.

The lad managed to obtain first position in the first round of the Olympiad, which was held at his school in August and saw learners in Grade Three participating.

He then represented the school at cluster level on August 14 at Laerskool Pam Brink in Springs.

Abahle scooped first place and went on to represent the cluster at district level.

This was held at the Dalpark Teachers’ Centre in Brakpan on September 30, where he placed third.

On October 21, Abahle will represent the district at provincial level which will be held at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg.

“The Mental Maths Olympiad is an initiative organised by the Department of Education to test the speed of the learners in mental calculations and accuracy, not using calculators.

“The learners are tested on things they know in multiplication, division, subtraction and addition.

“We are proud of Abahle as he is a learner who is good in all subjects, but excels in maths. We support him all the way,” says class teacher Sibongile Radebe.

Throughout the competition, Abahle has managed to bag numerous certificates, two medals, a trophy, a mental maths textbook and a calculator.

On October 31, he will attend the final award ceremony of the Olympiad at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre.

The young boy hopes to be an accountant or the president of the country one day.
