Law enforcement officers deployed to Etwatwa schools

Etwatwa – Things seem to have started on a good note at Etwatwa schools last week, when learners and teachers returned for the beginning of the third term.

This was due to Ekurhuleni Metro Police and SAPS officers being present at the schools, to ensure that learners remained safe.

The officers have been deployed for safety reasons for the remainder of the year, after the tension between residents and One Vision Lover (OVL) gang members, at the end of the previous school term.

Eight schools in the area were also visited by Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements, Clr Aubrey Nxumalo, who monitored the school situation and motivated the learners.

Nxumalo was joined by law enforcement officers and social workers.

He said the city remains concerned about the future and safety of learners following recent events, hence they wanted to make sure that teaching and learning continue uninterrupted.

The MMC also tried to put the learners at ease about their safety when they go to school.

He added that various groups, including the municipality, had engaged with the OVL gang members and that they would be having more meetings with them in future, to try to resolve tension within the community.
