Primary school wins soccer tournament

KwaThema – The u-13 soccer team from Michael Mkwanazi Primary School were crowned Sunbake Tournament champions and received a cash prize of R6 000 last Saturday.

The final took place at the KwaThema Sports Complex.

In second place was the team from WJ Mpangesi Primary School, who received a R3000 cash prize.

Nomnekane Primary School was third and Barcelona Primary School placed fourth.

The primary school soccer tournament started in July with 27 primary schools from the Gauteng Eastern District participating.

Barcelona Primary School were on a roll in the round robin group stage, not losing a single match.

They managed to make it to the semi-finals where they faced Michael Mkwanazi Primary School, but were defeated on penalties.

WJ Mpengesi Primary School faced Nomnekane Primary School in the semi-finals, with WJ Mpengesi proceeding after winning a penalty shootout.

Michael Mkwanazi and MJ Mpengesi played in the final, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

A penalty shootout determined which team would be crowned champions.

The Michael Mkwanazi team won the shootout 5-4.
