Reconciliation Park officially opened

Duduza - The Duduza Reconciliation Park was officially opened by the Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele, and other community leaders, last Saturday.

The Reconciliation Park is symbolic because this was where both Maki Skosana and Osborne Mbongeni Dlamini died during the Zero Hour Operation that claimed the lives of many youths who fought for freedom.

It was befitting that the park became a heritage site, where young people may engage in sports and arts and culture and enjoy the freedom that the youth in the apartheid regime never got to enjoy.

Gungubele addressed the community, and speaking on the importance of heritage, knowing where the community of Duduza comes from and the need to celebrate and honour those who fought for equality.

“Our children should not be denied information about our history; they ought to know about such historical happenings and monument sites,” says Gungubele.

The park has a number of sporting facilities, such as a skateboard park, a basketball court and arts and culture centre.

Ward councillor Tiny Mabena was there to welcome everyone who was present for the opening of the park, and she encouraged the community of Duduza to take care and use the sporting facilities as it is for the people of the township.

“We want our children to have a place where they can engage in extramural activities and not get involved in crime and substance abuse,” she says.

“The park is open for everyone and we encourage all who will be using it to not vandalise it, but make sure it is well taken care of.”
