Mathebula makes it into top 10 of province at Maths Olympiad

Tsakane - Nqobile Mathebula (9), a Grade Four pupil from Mangosuthu Primary School, has done well, becoming this year's Mathematics Olympiad Provincial winner.

Mathebula started her journey when her school selected her to go through to the first round of the Olympiad, which took place at Tsakane Primary School on August 27.

The young girl took first place, then proceeded to the next round, at Strubenvale Primary School, on September 1, and took second place in the Gauteng East District.

On September 5, Mathebula participated in the provincial level, at Rosebank Primary School and continued with her success, making it into the top 10 of the province.

Mathebula says that the Olympiad was a fun experience for her and not difficult.

“We did mental maths, which includes addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions and problem solving,” she says.

“I love mathematics and English and, when I finish school, I want to become a doctor.”

Maths teacher Sibongile Manyathela says the school selected Mathebula to be part of this ongoing programme by the district because of her great performance throughout the year.

“We are pleased that our pupil reached the provincial level,” she adds.

“All the pupils were using calculators, except for her, so this is a great achievement for us as a school.

“Mathebula managed to beat pupils of other races in maths, which shows that this subject has nothing to do with race, but just determination and hard work.”

She encourages parents to play an effective role in their children’s lives.

Mathebula was rewarded with a certificate and a trophy for her outstanding performance.

The father of the child, Collin Mathanjane, says he is very proud of his daughter.
