Learners plant trees for Arbor Week

Geluksdal - In celebration of Arbor Week, Grade Seven pupils from Geluksdal Primêre Skool planted 10 trees on their school grounds.

The trees planted were donated by the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Parks and Recreation Department.

According to the head of department for natural sciences at the school, Abner Modiga, they asked for the plants since their play ground is very dull, with little shade for the pupils to sit under.

This also formed part of the pupils curriculum in natural sciences, life and living.

“I am very happy for the donation as this will teach our pupils responsibility.

“When they plant the trees themselves, they won’t damage them but will be more responsible and will encourage others to look after them,” says Modiga.

Migail Stoffels (12) says the experience was fun and exciting for him and he has learnt that trees are an important part of life.

“I will make sure my peers water the trees and keep them safe,” he added.

Lucia Plaatjies (13) says she is grateful because this has taught them a lot about nature and team work.
