Local clinic to be converted into rehab centre

Daveyton - Residents of Sgodi Section in Daveyton have raised concerns about rumours circulating that their local clinic will be shutting down at the end of the month.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the Daveyton Extension Clinic will not be shutting down but will instead be converted into a rehabilitation centre.

“The department is accommodating a Social Development programme to accomplish management of substance abuse based on the community’s needs, says Gadebe.

He adds the Department of Health and Social Development is busy with the consultative process with all the stakeholders and the ward councillor (ward 68) will communicate with the community on the outcome of the deliberations.

Resident John Davis (32), expressed his concerns about people who are on chronic medication who will have to change clinics.

“People are unemployed in the area and now they will have to take a taxi to get to a clinic, senior citizens are not being considered,” says Davis.

Gadebe says the department is going to ensure residents are serviced by relocating them to the extended Level 11 Daveyton East Clinic which is 1km away from the Daveyton Extension Clinic, and chronic disease health clubs and ward-based outreach teams will assist with the elderly patients and other patients receiving chronic medication.

He emphasises that the National Department of Health’s norm is a 5km radius between clinics.
