Young cyclists dream big

KwaThema - While other children in the township cycle for fun, a group of six boys have adopted it as a sport which they wish to pursue in the future.

The youngsters are all still in primary school and, according to one of them, Thato Matshela (10), they spend their weekends cycling.

The group pedals around the township as a form of training.

The fact that they do not have a coach does not impact on their ambitions.

“We believe that one day our dream will be fulfilled and we will become the most famous and loved cyclists in the country,” says Thato.

The only support they currently receive is from their parents, who agreed to buy them bicycles to help them follow their dreams.

Thato says they are planning to compete with young cyclists from the other townships of Kwatsaduza.

Sfiso Ngubeni (11), who is also a member of the group, says nothing will stand in the way of them living their dreams.

“Others in the township do not take cycling as a serious sport, but we will prove to them that it is sport just like soccer, which dominates in our communities,” he adds confidently.

He encourages other young boys to believe in themselves and not to allow negative criticism to block their dreams.
