Two of three hijackers arrested in KwaThema

KwaThema - Two of three hijacking suspects could not escape from the police after they were cornered in KwaThema on Friday, at around 9am.

According to Springs SAPS spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora, a maroon Chevrolet was hijacked in Wankie Street, in Selcourt, by three suspects aged between 31 and 38.

He says the car was parked along the road when its owner was approached by one of the three men, pretending to be looking for a job.

Ramphora says one man insisted that the victim should take his contact number and inform him should any painting job become available.

“The victim fell for the man’s charm and went to fetch a pen and paper to write down his number,” says Ramphora.

That was when two of the men followed the victim to the car and one of them produced a firearm, pointed it at him and demanded the car keys.

The victim handed over the keys and the robbers fled the scene.

They were apparently not aware that a CPF member was watching as the hijacking took place and chased after them as they drove away.

A Springs police vehicle that was driving along Vlakfontein Road was stopped by the CPF member, who reported the incident to them.

The police called for back-up from the KwaThema police and cornered the vehicle in Paile Street, in KwaThema Extension Three.

One of the suspects ran away and the police arrested the other two.

They were taken to the Springs Police Station holding cells and are expected to appear in the Springs Magistrates Court soon, on hijacking charges.
