Construction of streets in Bacerlorna on hold

KwaThema - Construction workers downed tools after they did not get their wages on Friday.

About eight workers, who are currently involved in the construction of the new streets in KwaThema’s Barcelona section, downed tools on Tuesday to voice their frustration after their employer allegedly failed to pay them on time.

According to one of the security guards on site, Sizwe Thobela, the workers decided not to work on Tuesday to show their dissatisfaction with site management.

He reveals that since they started working on June 7, the working conditions have not been conducive and workers were paid only half of their wages last month.

Thobela says workers were promised their money by Monday, but this was not fulfilled.

“We were disappointed after we did not get the money as promised on Monday,” he says, adding that not getting paid also affects the workers’ families.

“Children are forced to go to school on empty stomachs as their parents fail to provide food for them,” he says.

Ward councillor Wilson Busakwe says he is aware of the problem.

He says following his conversation with the management on site, the workers will soon receive their money.

No manager was available on site to comment on the matter.
