Nkumbulo School in KwaThema gets a visit from maroyal committee

KwaThema - Representatives from the office of the mayor and the provincial legislature visited Nkumbulo Secondary School on Friday.

This was the committee’s second visit to the school since March.

Ekurhuleni’s chief whip, Robert Mashego, explained that the continued mayoral visits follows the school’s failure to produce excellent matric results last year.

He says during their tour inside the school they also noticed that the learning environment is not conducive enough for learning. “The school needs to be cleaned and some of the classrooms need to be renovated,” said Mashego.

The teachers explained that some of the learners miss school because they do not have school uniforms that are in a good condition and that the majority of girls from the disadvantaged families are forced to miss school for at least four days a month because they do not have sanitary towels.

During the visit more than 30 learners received sanitary towels and brand-new school uniforms.

Mashego challenged the Grade 12 learners to strive for better results this year.

“This school used to produce the best matric results but not in the past few years. We are here to motivate learners to take their education seriously and to ensure them that Ekurhuleni cares about their future,” concluded Mashego.

Selma Latifa Khumalo, one of the learners who received a new uniform thanked the mayoral committee for ensuring that learners get what they need at school.

“It is encouraging to know that the government cares about education in the townships,” said Khumalo, adding that

the uniform will help many learners who had no choice but to wear torn uniforms and be victims to the cold weather in winter.

“We promise that we will focus on our studies and bring back the dignity of the school by passing with flying colours,” she concluded.
