Health department responds to allegations about Pholosong

Tsakane - The Gauteng Department of Health has responded to allegations that foreign nationals need to pay to have their newborn babies released into their care.

Tsakane – The Gauteng Department of Health has responded to allegations that foreign nationals need to pay to have their newborn babies released into their care.

Some officials at the Pholosong Hospital have allegedly been refusing to hand over babies born to foreign nationals unless a fee is paid.

According to Steve Mabona, the media liaison officer for the Gauteng Department of Health, the department does not have a policy that could be misinterpreted in a manner that may suggest to officials that they need to refuse to hand over babies born to foreign nationals as a result of unpaid fees.

He says this is the first time such allegations have been bought to the attention of the department and management of the facility.

“We encourage the affected people to contact the hospital management and report such matters,” says Mabona.
