Toilets’ vandalism continues at Payneville Extension One

Payneville - The metro still has no answer as to when the beneficiaries will be moved to the developed Payneville Extension One area.

The R15-million development project started a few years ago and suddenly stopped, allegedly due

to the outstanding court order by the local private developers who are

against this development after the court ruled against them last year, on May 2.

According to metro spokesman Themba Gadebe, the high court has granted the complainants the right to appeal its judgement.

He explains that it is the metro’s intention to provide a full level of services, including water, sanitation, roads and electrical services to the area.

He adds that the metro intends to request that the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements provide funding on the budget for the construction of houses within this development.

Responding to the vandalism that takes place in that area, Gadebe says a security company was appointed after the completion of installation services and construction of toilet structures by the water and sanitation department.

“The security had to be stopped, as it was not financially viable to keep them on site after it was established that the cost to repair damaged toilets is less than the costs to provide the security to secure them,” says Gadebe.

He confirms that the metro does not know when the pending court case will be resolved.

Nkosinathi Luthuli (58), one of residents at Gugulethu/Everest Informal Settlement who are waiting to be moved to a developed area, says he has already lost hope of owning a developed piece of land.

“It has been three years since I started waiting to be taken to a better place, but it seems like my dream of escaping from the informal settlement to a developed area is slowly dying,” says disappointed Luthuli.
