Education is key in the fight against drugs

KwaThema - The Department of Social Development held a drug awareness event on Friday at the KwaThema Hall to educate the youth about drugs.

The department, in partnership with local stakeholders, hosted the substance and drug abuse awareness event in an effort to prevent the youth from being victims of drug and substance abuse.

Speaking on behalf of the department, Dan Leshike says after realising that many young people are involved in drug and substance abuse, the department saw the need to intervene and help educate them about the consequences.

He encourages schools in the townships to take part in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

Leshike says his department believes working together with youth organisations and community members, the fight against drugs can be defeated.

Thabang Xaba from the local Drug Action Committee challenges all government departments, communities and other local organisations to stand together and fight against drug abuse.

“Drugs destroy the future of our young people, while the drug dealers become rich,” says Xaba.

He says in order to fight against drug abuse, people need to be educated from an early age.

KwaThema resident David Mabena (28) says he will share the information he learned on the day with other young people.

“It is true that many young people have given up on their dreams because of drug addiction,” says Mabena.

He motivates drug addicts to quit drugs and seek help from relevant institutions.

Free treatment for substance and drug addiction is offered at the KwaThema Family Skills Centre.

The centre is situated at the corner of Thema Road and Job Maseko Street and treatment is offered on Fridays at noon.
