Senior citizens donate a wheelchair

KwaThema - Leratong Luncheon Club donated a brand new wheelchair to disabled Fani Mnguni (55), from KwaThema, on Monday.

The grannies’ club donated the wheelchair after they had won it in the Interwaste Initiative for schools and individuals competition.

According to the club’s chairman, Morongwe Godana, they had collected 9kg of white bread tags since 2013 and submitted these two weeks ago.

They were informed last Thursday, by the competition officials, that they are the winners of a brand new wheelchair.

Godana explains that, when they decided to enter the competition, they knew that they wanted to win it, so that they could donate the wheelchair to Mnguni.

Godana says that, after realising that Mnguni’s wheelchair was no longer in a good condition and that he could not afford to buy a new one, it was their dream to help him get one.

“We believe that the new wheelchair will bring back his dignity and freedom to move around his yard without depending on other people to push him,” she explains, adding that her club will continue to help those in the community who need assistance.

After receiving his new wheelchair, the White City section resident, who was not born with the disability, thanked the club.

He explains that his disability came after he started suffering cramps in the lower body when he was eight years old.

“I was still a young boy when I had to start using a wheelchair to move around,” he says, holding back tears.

Mnguni told the club members that the old wheelchair which he was using was giving him problems.

“The wheelchair’s brakes were not working and the wheels were not turning properly,” he says, appealing to the club to continue show care to community members who depend on the mercy of other people for help.
