Community walk to combat nyaope

Duduza - The Duduzekani Tshidisehang Community Project (DTCP) hosted a fun walk last Tuesday from Ndudula Street to the Tswaraganang Hall in Mofokeng Street.

The fun walk, which commemorated Youth Day, was also an awareness campaign to alert the community to the rise of drug abuse, especially nyaope.

A large number of community members, as well as representatives from a number of non-profit organisations and the Department of Social Development attended to show their support.

Mokete Rantla (43), an executive member of the DTCP, explained the importance of the community coming together to devise a strategy to try and stop the youth from abusing drugs and other substances.

“It is our responsibility to make sure nyaope doesn’t claim any more young lives,” says Rantla.

Moipone Malema (28), a resident who has nyaope addicts in her family, is encouraged to see the problem is now viewed as a community issue and not an individual issue.

“My brother and cousins are addicts and we are happy to see that help is offered to them from within the community,” says Malema.

The fun walk ended with motivational talks from various organisations and testimonials from recovering nyaope addicts.
